Westerham Amateur Dramatic Society is delighted to bring to the stage “The Seagull” written by Anton Chekhov, adapted by Martin Crimp, and directed by Marli Bailey
The Seagull, a new version by Martin Crimp, premiered at the National Theatre, London in June 2006. It is a play about a very human tendency to reject love that is freely given and seek it where it is withheld. Many of its characters are caught in a destructive triangular relationship that evokes both pathos and humour. What the characters cannot successfully avoid is the destructive force of time, the passage of which robs some, like Madame Arkadina of beauty, and others like her son Konstantin of hope. This version of Chekhov’s first great play reveals the full force of its comedy and cruelty as each character is denied the thing that they most crave.
